11.3. BASICS OF EMOTIONAL LITERACY

Each emotion serves a distinct purpose. Emotions are so integrated into behavior that it is sometimes difficult to recognize their influence until after an interaction or situation has passed. Given the ubiquitous nature of emotional energy, clients can be aided by learning about the effect of emotions on behavior, especially in complex situations.

Conversations about emotional intelligence should include some recognition of the biology of emotions. Research on how our bodies respond to emotional states and how performance is affected by emotions is conclusive, and to underestimate this importance would be folly.
