13.1. Making a user feel comfortable

If your application is available in only one language (or locale if we use the standard lingo), then you limit your reach. Certainly, some languages may feel they’re the de facto ones on the web, and these may be the ones you want. But we suspect that most of you want your applications today to have a global reach, and to do that you should make it as easy for the user to use as possible, and present the user interface in a familiar manner to them.

What do we mean by familiar manner? One answer is obvious, and some answers have subtleties:

  • User’s language—This is probably the thing that comes to mind. Whereas a French person might expect to see French words and phrases, a Spaniard would expect Spanish ...
