Basic Theory and Design Procedures for Arrayed Waveguide Structures

1 INTRODUCTION

Planar lightwave circuits consist of a planar arrangement of optical waveguides on a substrate. A common waveguide material is silica. Silica waveguides consist of doped glass cores embedded in less-doped glass on a silicon substrate. Optical fibers can often be directly attached to these silica waveguides. Once in the planar lightwave circuit, the light can be filtered, switched, can interfere with other lightwaves, and so forth.
