4   The Film Laboratory

The film laboratory is one of the few remaining technical areas in moving pictures that has changed very little and still manages to thrive.

Film is processed pretty much the same as it was in the silent-movie days. Film itself has improved, but film processing has remained relatively unchanged. (There are issues causing change in film labs, such as EPA regulations regarding harmful chemicals in the air and water. But, for our purposes, we’ll let those issues remain the headaches of the lab-guys themselves.)
