Mapping out the Timeline

A project timeline improves the product and process by mapping out initial task order. Start by creating a list of tasks and dependencies, and then put them in a reasonable order considering constraints such as staff availability. Next, estimate the cost of each step, both in hours of effort and projected time required. When calculating schedules in calendar time, consider that your staff isn't available to work on your project full time every week because of disruptions such as meetings, vacation, holidays, and illness. You can use a spreadsheet to build up your estimates and track time to complete the project as it progresses. All these techniques are covered in more detail in Chapters Chapter 12 and Chapter 14.
