Chapter 10. Group Policy Preference Extensions

Group Policy, when it was originally born with Windows 2000, was a really big deal. It came with a lot of exciting new features to tinker with. To me, that was the birth of Group Policy, or "Group Policy 1.0."

The next revolution was when the GPMC was added to the power of Group Policy, making the ease of deployment and use of Group Policy skyrocket. To me that was "Group Policy 1.5."

This chapter welcomes what I like to think of as "Group Policy 2.0."

And it's built into Windows Server 2008 and available for Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 (but sadly, not Windows 2000). The new tool is called Group Policy Preference Extensions, and it was born from Microsoft's recent acquisition ...
