“To lose your school is to lose your identity as a town,” says Newcomb Town Supervisor George Canon.

Newcomb, New York, is a 255-mile road trip from Manhattan, but it might as well be a million miles away. The sportsman’s paradise sits inside Adirondack Park, 59 miles from Burlington, Vermont, and includes the Lake Harris campground and about 481 residents.

If you look at satellite images of Newcomb on Google Maps, all you can see are lakes, trees, and the Newcomb School playground. It’s as if the surrounding forest is trying to swallow the school and return to the days of the Iroquois and Algonquin tribes.
