Ways to Cross the 180 Degree Line Safely
We know that when covering shots for a scene, the camera should normally stay on only one side of the set within the 180 degree circular arc. We do this so that when the various shots of that scene’s coverage are edited together, the screen direction of movements and the eye-lines of characters match the established spatial relations found in the wider master shot. There may be times when you wish to move the camera around the set and get new angles on action from the opposite or “incorrect” side of the axis of action. This can be done but there are some special ways to do it without it being jarring to the viewing audience.
