Always Have Something in Focus

It is extremely important that you always have something within your frame in focus. The human visual system, when working correctly, always allows you to see some plane of space around you in proper focus. You have the luxury of automatic focus shifting—meaning that you can be focusing on something 2 inches away from your eye one moment and then focusing on an object very far way the next moment. Camera lenses either have no autofocus capability (film emulsion cameras) or have auto controls that guess at what object you would like to have in focus (video cameras). Controlling your focus manually is usually preferred. You get greater creative control that way.
