Quantity of Light: Sensitivity and Exposure
Light is needed for all motion picture production (emulsion film or video) because its presence, in the correct quantities, allows for correct exposure. This means that when a high enough quantity of light illuminates something in front of your lens, it can be seen and registered by the recording medium. You have to have enough light falling on your scene for it to be visible to your film or video CCD. The human visual system has a wide range of “exposure” sensitivity when it comes to lesser or greater amounts of light. We do not have to swap out our eyes for low light viewing nor do we consciously switch over our eyes for seeing in very bright light.
