36.1. Introduction, Problem Statement, and Context
Digital imaging systems include a lens and an image sensor. The lens forms an image on the image sensor plane. The image sensor contains an array of light-sensitive pixels, which produce a digital value indicative of the light photons accumulated on the pixel over the exposure time. Conventional image sensor arrays are sensitive to a broad range of light wavelengths, typically from about 350 to 1100 nm, and thus do not produce color images directly.
