Chapter EightThe Need for a New Model of Public Administration

This chapter raises the issue of whether the current model of public administration, centered on a bureaucratic approach to management and leadership, is sufficient for today’s cross-sector collaborative challenges. The chapter first examines the characteristics of the current model and various reactions to it, including New Public Management, and then explores alternative concepts. The chapter concludes with a tentative framework for creating a new model of public management that can better address our current challenges in a multisector environment.
