26.1 INTRODUCTION

The electronics industry underwent an important transition toward designing and selling environmentally friendly products in the past five years. This transition has been triggered primarily by the introduction of environmental legislations around the globe and market trends that demand and reward sustainable and environmentally conscious design. The earliest and the most significant of these regulations are the Restriction of Hazardous Substances1 (RoHS) and Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment2 (WEEE) directives passed by the European Union.
