Google’s global mapping

The study of Google News indicates the dominant US presence in popular online news sources in different languages, and thus sheds light on the digital divide of information which is evident in this channel. This chapter continues the investigation of Google and its contribution to the bias of knowledge by observing Google Earth and Google Maps. Although many users may regard maps and images as ‘neutral’, it was found that some of Google’s depictions are political and biased, providing for a start much deeper and wider information about the USA than other countries.
