The Editors
K. N. Panikkar an eminent historian of modern India is currently Vice-Chairman, Kerala State Higher Education Council, and Chairman, Kerala Council for Historical Research. He was formerly a professor of history at the Centre for Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi, and Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, Kerala.
M. Bhaskaran Nair was Professor and Head, Department of Political Science, University of Kerala. He was also Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kerala, and Member, Governing Body of the Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram. He passed away in April 2011 while working on this volume.
