THE INDEPENDENT MODEL
If the primary influence on the Hollywood film is its relationship to the popular or entertainment-oriented arts, the primary influence on the independent film is its relationship to the fine arts: photography, painting, the literary novel, the short story, and the poem. In its evolution, the independent film has also been influenced by the documentary film and the experimental film. Its history proceeded in tandem with these two other metagenres. And like those genres, its goals were not to entertain, as was the case with the Hollywood film, but rather to educate like the documentary, or to explore an artistic personal issue as was the case of the experimental film.
