This project began its life as a workshop on International Government and Social Spaces which we convened at the University of Auckland in 2001. We thank the International Council for Canadian Studies for funding this event through their Programme for International Research Linkages, and all those who attended for their helpful comments. Many of our chapters were first presented at the workshop while others were developed for panels at the 2002 International Studies Association meeting in New Orleans, and the 2002 International Sociological Association meeting in Brisbane.
