10.9. Organizational Commitments and a Principle-Based Approach

Like any other critical initiative, preventing bias requires a set of organizational commitments, the most important being a discernible commitment from top management. Senior management's view of the relative importance of any topic is conveyed both through action and inaction, and the consistency of words and deeds is of critical importance. For example, allowing abusive employees who are otherwise star performers to move through the ranks of the organization, while mediocre performers who barely cross the line in committing inappropriate behavior are dealt with harshly, sends a resounding message about company priorities.
