Eric had opted to mention his race, albeit subtly, when applying to college and business school. But he had never told his academic advisers, neither on paper nor verbally, that he was gay. When he was being recruited by some of the nation's top firms, he wondered if it wouldn't benefit him to mention his sexual orientation or at least scope out a firm's gay-friendly reputation (or lack thereof) before offering a resume. In the end, he decided that although his race might work against him, it was something he certainly couldn't hide. As for being gay, he stayed in the closet.
