Listen to Your Audience

SUCCESSFUL SPEAKERS HAVE ENOUGH presence of mind that they can monitor their audience’s body language during the course of a presentation and react accordingly. The result is a dynamic presentation that treats the audience with respect, pausing when it needs to pause, moving on when it needs to move on.

This is what I mean about listening to the audience.

Most of us read body language unconsciously. When someone is fidgeting and not making eye contact, we sense that we’re not enthralling that person. When an audience member greets our proposals with a frown, crossed arms, and a shake of the head, we get it—that person is not buying what we’re offering.
