Wired to Care is not a memoir. Still, many of the ideas in this book developed gradually in my mind over the last twenty years, so writing it has evoked a great number of flashbacks and recollections, starting, of course, with that day in college when I first sat in a wheelchair. I should therefore start out by giving thanks to my friend Muffy Davis and also to my professors Rolf Faste and Sara Little Turnbull. Thought leaders of design in their own right, Rolf and Sara once taught the Needfinding class that I now do, and it was they who first admonished me to step outside of myself and walk in other people’s shoes.
