Glossary

This glossary contains a set of informal definitions of some of the terms introduced in this book: Common GIS terms, such as vector and raster, which are described in standard GIS textbooks are not included.

1-cell:

One of the names for the lines connecting nodes in the link and node data structure for representing vector data. Others are chain, edge, link, segment and arc.

Address:

Number which uniquely identifies one unit of storage in computer memory. Computer circuitry is designed so that information can be moved between the CPU and all addresses with equal speed.

Algorithm:

A procedure or set of steps to provide a solution to a problem. It should be possible to prove that the algorithm will always provide a solution. See heuristic ...
