Stephen Wise earned a degree in geography in 1976 at Bristol University and then spent four years as a postgraduate student in London. Between 1980 and 1990, he worked as a computer programmer in University Computer Centres in London and Bath before moving to his current position at Sheffield University, where he is a senior lecturer in the Geography Department. His teaching and research are mostly concerned with GIS (geographic information system), although he also teaches physical geography. In his spare time he is a keen musician and a member of the Down Trodden String Band. His wife and two daughters do not know the slightest thing about GIS.
