5.1 THE TOOLKIT

The G-PON management model assumes that the ONU is a logical extension of the OLT, not a separate network element to be managed on its own. This is most clearly evident in the naming convention. A stand-alone network element has its own name, whereas an ONU is always named as a component under the hierarchy of its parent OLT, for example:

     Blade number in the OLT -
            PON port number on the blade -
                   ONU number on the PON.

When the ONU includes an RG function that the operator wishes to manage separately, there may be a logical separation inside the ONU. The ONU's PON identity is as described above, but the CPE identity may be completely independent, just as if the RG were a separate element in its own right. Coordination between identifiers occurs in network management databases, not within or between the equipments themselves. It would not be expected that the OLT or the OMCI information model would even know the name of the associated CPE.

The standard management interface for G-PON systems is called the OMCI. OMCI allows the OLT to perform full fault, configuration, performance, and security functions (FCAPS) at the ONU. OMCI is ...
