Intermediate events occur in the middle of the process.

Throw and Catch Intermediate Events

The Intermediate Events occur in the middle of the sequence flow of the process in between the Start and End Events. Unlike Start Events, which can only catch triggers and End Events, which can only throw triggers, the Intermediate Events can catch as well as throw triggers. The Intermediate Events can be produced by the process (throw type) or they can be consumed by the process (catch type). There can be multiple Intermediate Events of catch and throw type in a process.
