Principles of texturing

Texturing an object is the process by which you paint your model in as realistic a manner as possible. It is a complex art form and takes lots of practice to master. Let’s start with some general principles for texturing an object. Never leave objects in a pristine condition. This will make the object look fake and unbelievable. Always add levels of dirt, grime, and wear and tear to the object to make it look believable. Try to envision the object’s history – how has it been used – and then communicate this to the viewer. An object will be more worn where people have been handling it. There will be sun fading on the areas repeatedly exposed to the sun, plus layers of dirt, grime, rust, sludge, ...
