Principles of posing

Our dragon looks pretty good, but he is way too stiff and doesn’t yet look alive. To create the illusion of life we need to pose him asymmetrically. Living creatures are never in a perfectly symmetrical pose, partly because living things are never perfectly symmetrical themselves and partly because our movements are never that coordinated. An artist can spend weeks creating the perfect pose for his or her character! Take your time and do this part right. A good pose can make the difference between a stellar finished piece and a lackluster one. A creature is usually putting most of their weight on one foot or the other.
