The Rest of Us Are Still Getting It Wrong

The Standish Group publishes an annual report on the state of health of software technology. The report is generally regarded as objective since their business is to acquire data and publish accurate analyses not directed at advertising some method or software tool. One recent report gives us a snapshot of where the state of the art of software engineering was at the beginning of this decade (Standish Group, 2001). Their top-ten list of factors leading to success in software engineering weighted according to their relative importance, shown in Table 1-1, reveals why software projects continue to fail.
