People need to believe in a “system.” Whether in regard to morals and the hereafter (organized religion), the management of our societies (government), or the search for our daily bread (economic systems), people want to believe in a stable set of rules. This belief in an overriding, chaos-vanquishing order is very comforting, so much so that it appears to be built into the human psyche and has been a prominent part of social life since the beginning of civilization 5,000 years ago.
