“What do you want to be when you grow up?” My folks asked me that question well into my teen years. My usual answer: “I want to be a baseball player or a fireman — probably a fighter pilot.” Well, by high school, I figured out that I wouldn’t be getting any sports contracts, but I still wasn’t quite sure. My parents would smile and encourage me to find a good “fallback” career, so I set my sights on computers and technology. Twenty-five years ago, we had majors like computer science, information systems, and computer engineering, but that was about it. Today the field of computer science and technology has grown in complexity, and a diverse set of majors has emerged to help people along the way.
