State Grants

You will have a better chance of receiving a government grant from your state than from the federal government, but even so, all of the aforementioned caveats apply here as well. Grants are not given to entrepreneurs to start new businesses. There is no free lunch. Grants are given to entrepreneurs who can help their state promote economic activity or otherwise foster a valued social cause like creating jobs. You might be able to locate a state grant, for instance, to help expand child care, or to create green technologies, or to promote tourism.

Every state has some sort of economic development agency intended to spur the economy of that state (although the agency may be called by a different name). That agency will list any grants that may be available. You can find the appropriate agency for your state by going to www.ecodevdirectory.com.
