Chapter 8You Did It!

Focus on Impact

One chilly California morning in December of 2015, Jason facilitated a leadership workshop for a small group of senior leaders at a social media company in Silicon Valley. A few weeks prior to the event, he reviewed the five core values of the organization. Each statement was designed to provide employees and visitors alike with a clear mission, vision, and direction of what leadership in that company believes is important.

The first core value on the list, “Focus on impact,” reminded Jason of the Stage 1 Motivation Question: “What do you want to be known for?” During his time on campus with employees from various departments in the organization, he asked people what that first value meant to them. Over and over again, it was a reminder that regardless of how that question is phrased, the key to momentum is to connect to the reason why you do what you do.

As your coaches, we want you to identify—and identify with—your purpose. We want you to know what's important to you, and why. We believe the most important thing you can focus on is the impact your actions, choices, and achievements have on your life and the lives of the people you care about.

To achieve your potential, you need to answer the legacy question and determine the positive and constructive impact you'll have on those you serve throughout your life.
