SITE CHARACTERIZATION PROCESS

2.1Introduction

The purpose of a geotechnical site characterization program is to obtain qualitative and quantitative understanding of the subsurface at a given site. Information is gathered by various means, starting with research of existing information, collecting information from the surface, and, finally, conducting original invasive underground exploration. The data from these various types of investigations are usually presented in site investigation reports and boring logs, and depicted visually through subsurface profiles. Subsurface profiles are usually rendered in a two-dimensional format, though a three-dimensional model may be considered for advanced and complex subsurface profiles.
