What does it look like?

It’s a shot that reveals a character’s reaction in a quick way by using a rack focus from the phone to the character’s face, or vice versa.

How’s it done?

It’s done by starting or ending on a shot of a phone and using a rack focus of the lens to go from the phone to the character. It could also be in a reflection on the phone display screen, mirror, or tabletop.

When should I use it?

This shot is best used for phone calls that could mean life or death for the characters. It’s a great way to combine an ordinary shot of a phone with an emotional reaction of a character and draw attention to the importance of the call.
