Chapter 36. e careers
Look back. During the more stable times of the 1950s and 1960s the careers enjoyed by corporate executives were built on solid foundations. This was the era of corporate man (there was no such thing as corporate woman at this time). Grey-suited and obedient, corporate man was unstintingly loyal to his employer. He spent his life with a single company and rose slowly, but quietly, up the hierarchy.
Implicit to such careers was the understanding that loyalty and solid performance brought job security. This was mutually beneficial. The executive gained a respectable income and a high degree of security. The company gained loyal, hard-working executives.
