Power shifts. The gen e reality is that recruitment firms are sitting pretty. So, too, are gen e. "It will mean that true executive talent will have their choice of the plum roles," says Bell of Performance Research Associates. "It will mean the old-style administrator will become in less demand and will have to settle for positions below mahogany row. It will also spark a redefinition of what it means to be an executive." Executives who have built their careers on their ability to rifle through their in-tray quickly and handle paperwork face fast approaching extinction. Trouble is that the new skills of the executive are more ethereal and elusive — motivation, mentoring, coaching.
