Panoramic, slow motion shots of the majestic zebra charging across Africa’s Serengeti, common in many nature documentaries, rarely take note of ostriches lurking just off camera, but they’re often nearby. The flightless fowl has a poor sense of smell and diminished capacity for hearing, a definite liability in the environs in which it exists. It therefore relies on the zebra’s movement to alert it to immediate danger.
