Functional Approach for Signal Analysis

In this chapter, the functional approach for signal analysis (Gardner 1987d, 1991c), (Gardner and Brown 1991), (Gardner 1994), (Leimgkow and Napolitano 2006) is addressed. This approach is an alternative to the classical one based on stochastic processes (Section 1.1) since signals are modeled as single functions of time rather than realizations (sample paths) of stochastic processes. Statistical functions are defined through infinite-time averages of single functions of time rather than as ensemble averages of an ensemble of realizations.
