Preface

This book, ‘General Theory of Relativity’, is intended as a textbook for the Physics and Mathematics students at the B.Sc. (Hons.) and M.Sc. level of our national universities. The theory of relativity developed in two stages—Special Theory of Relativity and the General Theory of Relativity. Whereas the special theory dispensed with the concepts of absolute space and time of Newtonian mechanics and adapted the concept of inertial frame to the basic postulate of the constancy of the velocity of light; the general theory required that the laws of physics must be same for all observers, accelerated or not and thereby extended it to non-inertial frames. Alternatively stated, general theory of relativity is a relativistic theory of gravitation ...
