Chapter 5. Playing with Console and Arcade Hardware

Hacks 47-62

It’s hard to talk about games without occasionally considering the hardware that runs the games.

What do consoles and arcade machines have to do with each other besides taking up too much space under your television?

They’re amazingly cool to hack, whether you’re doing crazy things Sega never intended the Dreamcast to do or swapping out JAMMA boards in a full-fledged official arcade cabinet. Consider what happens when you insert a disc and turn on the machine or connect your console to the Internet. What if you had some way of intercepting or modifying that process? What cool things could you do?

Maybe you’re just interested in the games themselves, but modding the hardware is the only way to play exotic games from other territories. If you ever wanted to run that obscure Japanese NES game on your American machine—or something even more obscure—here’s a good place to start.
