Widget’s travels would be a lot more interesting if he faced a band of rival robots, seeking to impede his progress through the level. Through the scripting of Artificial Intelligence (or AI), props and lifeless characters can be given commands, routines, and goals, making them appear to be alive, thinking, and functioning. Like many other aspects of game development, writing good AI routines is an art form all unto itself and is a specialized field of study. Although it’s pretty easy to give an enemy a list of commands to perform, it’s much harder to make the player believe that the enemy is actively thinking and behaving in a manner that’s just out to get him.
