alpha/alpha map/alpha channels An alpha channel allows an image to appear partially or fully transparent. Areas of the channel that are painted black denote full transparency, whereas areas of the channel painted white denote full opacity. By combining the alpha with the normal color channels, an image can appear to be nonsquare, be semitransparent, or have “holes” cut out of it.
