Map Extraction

The first thing we should do is pull all the information we will need from our high-resolution model. If you have used Mudbox, ZBrush, or Silo, this will be a simple task since these applications have built-in tools for map extraction. The process usually involves having both the source and target models occupying the same space before you use the appropriate tool to extract the normal map. The options when doing this are pretty much the same across packages and allow you to specify a search distance. This distance tells the tool how far outside the target mesh it should look when searching the source model’s surface.

As time goes by, these options are being expanded upon to give better and easier results.
