Methods and Methodologies

To paraphrase the old joke, if you ask three different developers to define the phrase “development methodology,” you’ll get at least six different answers. Most developers have some concept of using a methodology, whether they actually use one or not.

Boiled down to its simplest definition, a methodology is the formalization of how to do something. It’s not the actual doing, but rather the process we follow to do it.

There is a subtle difference between a method and a methodology. A method is something you do in a particular fashion.
