Chapter 2. Methodology for Algorithm Design

2.1. Introduction

In this chapter we describe a general procedure for choosing an algorithm and determining its performance. Then, we apply the procedure to a hypothetical but realistic problem that might be encountered in practice. In particular, we consider the design of a signal processing algorithm to estimate blood flow velocity that could be implemented in a Doppler ultrasound device. This estimation problem is also of great importance in radar, sonar, and communications.
