THE TELEPHONE REVOLUTIONIZED COMMUNICATION. Its impact foreshadowed the coming computer revolution. As telephones became more and more common, appearing in nearly every home and workplace, they became the way to communicate. Indeed, until the mid 1980s, personal and business communications involved three primary tools:

• Telephone—Used for real-time voice communications between people

• Answering machines and voice mail—Critical for store-and-forward voice messaging and retrieval

• Fax—Real-time data transmission of documents through analog phone lines
