Appendix A. Introduction to Mathematical Software Packages

Chapter 4, “Introduction to Computations in Chemical Engineering,” introduced a variety of mathematical problems encountered by a chemical engineer in his/her academic and professional career. Chapters 5 through 9 presented some of these problems and computations executed using Excel and Mathcad. Excel is, of course, ubiquitous on personal computers as a part of the Microsoft Office Suite. The other software, Mathcad, is not as universally available. Nevertheless, several other software packages that can offer comparable capabilities are invariably available, both in academic institutions and organizations beyond.
