Membrane electrode assemblies for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells

Abstract:

Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) using hydrogen are attractive for certain mobile and portable applications and especially as a prime motive power for automobiles and other forms of transport. They can generate high electrical power densities, in excess of 1.0 W/cm2 of cross-sectional area, and high current densities (>> 1 kA/cm2) at relatively high efficiency greater than 50%. Performance of the fuel cell is primarily determined by the design of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) and the choice of materials for its manufacture.
