168 HOURS

Every math major I know has a favorite number, and I am no exception. My favorite number is 168, which is the number of hours in a week. No matter who we are, what we do for a living, where we live, or how productive we are, we all get the same amount of time: 168 hours per week. The difference among us is in how we spend that time.

As you think about your life balance, consider the elements that are most important to you. I call each part a “life bucket,” into which you pour a certain amount of your time, energy, and attention. As you have only 168 hours a week, no more and no less, you want to be conscious of where and how you spend that precious resource.
