Dual-System Sound Revisited

We explored the dual-system (or sync sound) workflows back in Chapter 1, “Shooting with Editing in Mind.” (You did read Chapter 1 and not just skip to this chapter, right?) You learned that the microphone built into your DSLR is “OK” at best. It’s fine to use in a pinch and it’s OK for background sound, but it’s abysmal when it comes to interviews or critical audio. The camera mic’s best use is to provide good reference audio to sync up to the real audio you record with a stand-alone audio recorder.
